The Austrian NGO “Vier Pfoten International”, which sterilizes stray dogs in Chisinau, calls on the Chisinau residents to tell it about the places where the vagrant dogs like to get together, by calling 079905068, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Anca Tomescu, a program manager with Vier Pfoten, told a news conference on Wednesday they sterilized 11 dogs on their first project day (March 24). “If the whether is good, we'll catch about 35 dogs a day,” she said.
According to veterinary Cornel Stoinescu, the sterilized dogs will be returned to the places they are caught in, 24 hours later. “They get also cleansed of parasites, vaccinated, registered, and an earring is put in their ear to be identified from the distance. The females having recently given birth will get sterilized by the end of the project,” Stoinescu said.
The project will run 6 – 8 weeks, as all the costs are incurred by Vier Pfoten International. At the end of the project the Chisinau local administration says it will set up a specialized service to sterilize the stray dogs. “We'll identify a plot of land to build the shelter on, in order to continue their sterilization,” Health Division head Mihai Moldovanu said.
According to the assessments of Vier Pfoten International, there may be about 15,000 vagrant dogs in Chisinau.
Vier Pfoten International's experience is over 20 years, as it ran such projects in cities in Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Slovakia, Macedonia, Greece.
