Cimislia dump becomes growing menace for residents

As Cimislia extended its boundaries over the years, so has the town's landfill, becoming a dangerous neighborhood for the residents living on the outskirts. The dump has grown to cover 40 hectares at present. “We have a landfill which was located correctly according to wind direction, but since it was set up, more houses have been built until the town boundaries reached this landfill. What annoys residents the most are the plastic bags that get carried by the wind and are spread over extensive areas”, Mayor Gheorghe Raileanu of Cimislia told Info-Prim Neo. Gheorghe Raileanu says that waste is collected once a month by a town service, for which purpose the local authorities allocate 70,000 lei annually. “We have been looking for a solution to this problem for several years. Eventually, help came from the Czech Development Agency, which agreed to finance the construction of a new 6 hectare landfill within the territory of the Cimislia Water Treatment Plant. Construction will hopefully start in 2013. Meanwhile, we will continue to use the old landfill”, said Gheorghe Raileanu. Earlier ombudswoman Aurelia Grigoriu, concerned by the waste problem on Cimislia's outskirts, requested the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Environment to initiate a state inquiry and find a remedy.
