Civil society complains of marginalization in parliamentary commission investigating April events
“The participation of the civil society in the work of the commission for the elucidation of the April events is ephemeral. The representatives of the civil society do not have a clear statute in the given commission,” said Sergiu Ostaf, the executive director of the Resource Center for Human Rights. On November 30, the Moldovan nongovernmental organizations made public their position in a letter, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The signatories of the letter formulated seven principles on the basis of which the members of the given commission should work. The establishment of the truth must be the major principle.
The representatives of the civil society expressed their dissatisfaction with the fact that the former and the present government spoke about the importance of the civil society participating in the investigation of the causes that generated violence in April this year, but the promises have not been kept.
Sergiu Ostaf said he was invited to a meeting of the commission to present the information accumulated by them meanwhile, but he considers that the participation of the civil society is declarative. “We can present the information, but we do not have enough rights to put questions and take part in discussions. I believe the representatives of the civil society are sometimes more trustworthy than the politicians, who have been involved in those events and have biased positions,” Ostaf said.
Asked what the position of the civil society is, given that the two camps that appeared inside the commission demand investigating the consequences or the conditions that led to the protests, Sergiu Ostaf said there should be probed the public meetings of April 6 and 7 and the steps taken by the police to ensure public order.
“It is important to analyze how the democratic institutions functioned in Moldova, how the public and private mass media and the political parties acted, what responsibility the representatives of these institutions bear – they tried to negotiate, to clam things down or they contributed to the escalation of the situation,” Ostaf said.
