Civil society in favor of ratification of UN Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities
The civil society welcomes the Parliament’s intention to ratify this year the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities signed by Moldova in March 2007, it is said in a communiqué issued by the Initiative for the Ratification of the given Convention, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The Initiative makes reference to the statements about the necessity of ratifying the Convention this year made at the first sitting of the spring parliamentary session. The Convention will be accompanied by a plan of action for implementing it.
The Initiative for the Ratification of the UN Convention considers that the problem of social integration of the persons with disabilities necessities a broad and immediate political consensus. The over 170,000 persons with disabilities have waited for three years for the Convention to be ratified.
According to the authors of the document, the ratification of the Convention will allow Moldova to benefit from information, experience and the best world practices in treating the persons with special needs as well as from direct assistance in initiating support programs for these groups of persons. The implementation of the Convention would lead to an increase in the number of economically active persons in the country.
About 6,000 persons signed the petition in support of the ratification of the Convention addressed to the Parliament and more than 60 active NGOs joined the Initiative for the Ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is an international human rights instrument of the United Nations intended to protect the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities. Parties to the Convention are required to promote, protect, and ensure the full enjoyment of human rights by persons with disabilities and ensure that they enjoy full equality under the law.
The Iinitiative for the Ratification of the UN Convention is a coordinated body of the Alliance of Organizations for Persons with Disabilities that includes more than 60 organizations. It aims to promote the ratification of the UN Convention and popularize it.
