Company manager to stand trial for corrupting NFSA chief

The manager of two firms accused of active corruption will be tried for corrupting an official of the National Food Safety Agency (NFSA). The man faces up to six years in jail and a fine of up to 200,000 lei, IPN reports.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, being in the Russian Federation at the start of last year, the culprit, who ran two companies, phoned the head of the Phytosanitary Products and Fertilizers Control Division of the National Food Safety Agency and promised him money in exchange for the confirmation of phytosanitary certificates for agricultural products exported to Russia. After being informed about the confirmation of certificates, the man transferred US$100 to the NFSA employee.

The criminal case started against the NFSA chief who accepted the bribe was sent to court earlier. Under the Penal Code of the Republic of Moldova, passive corruption is punished with three to seven years in jail.
