Conflicts at “Plaiul Fagului” reserve

A former employee of the state nature reserve “Plaiul Fagului” seeks help from the society and the law enforcement bodies as he considers that his life and the lives of the members of his family are in danger. In a news conference on May 13, the zoologist of the Academy of Sciences Ion Turcanu said he is persecuted by the administration of the reserve, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to Ion Turcanu, the problems arouse after he wrote an article about the serious violations committed inside the reserve. On May 9, he was banned from moving along the road connecting Chisinau and his native village Radenii Vechi of Ungheni district, which goes through the reserve. Furthermore, he was recently hit by the manager of the reserve on the head. Turcanu said there is dictatorship at the reserve “Plaiul Fagului” and the employees there write an employment application and a resignation without date when they come to work. Wood is worked inside the reserve, which is a violation of the legislation. Turcan also said that the manager rented about 300 hectares of land and cultivates them with the machinery and employees of the reserve. The former employee stressed that many other violations are committed at the reserve, which should be investigated. Attending the news conference, the manager of the reserve Boris Curos denied all the accusations. He said Turcanu is angry with him because he fired him in 2005 after he shot dead a deer. Curos accused Turcanu of lobbying in favor of a politician, who wants to get rid of the older administration and promote his people. He did not want to reveal the politician's name. According to Marin Scobioala, of the Guard and Protection Service of the state-run forestry agency Moldsilva, the Center for Combating Corruption and Economic Crime and the Ecological Inspectorate are inspecting the scientific reserve “Plaiul Fagului”. Scobioala doubts Ion Turcanu's assertions, saying they are not supported by evidence. The reserve “Plaiul Fagului” was founded in March 1992 with the aim of preserving, regenerating and studying one of the most picturesque ecological ecosystems in Codrilor area. The reserve is about 6,000 hectares in area.
