Constitutional Court comments on its salary raises

Public discussions on salary raises for Constitutional Court judges often have not been based on evidence, with attempts to mislead the public about these raises being exaggerated, the court said in a statement.

In reality, according to the statement, the net salary of a Constitutional Justice will increase by 7,204 lei and of the Constitutional Court president by 4,804 lei starting January 1.

According to the CC, the misleading persists even after the recent amendments to the Law on the Unitary Wage System in the Budget Sector. In order to avoid “continuous harm to the image of the Constitutional Court through these allegations”, the CC considered it necessary to present the exact differences between the salary of constitutional judges in 2021, the salary they will have in 2022, and how much the salary of legal assistants at the Constitutional Court has changed.

In particular, in 2021, the gross salary of a constitutional judge was 31,954 lei, and the net salary was 25,589 lei. At the same time, the gross salary of the President of the Constitutional Court was 39,000 lei, and the net salary was 31,232 lei. The gross salary of a legal assistant at the Constitutional Court was 8,687 lei. In 2022, as a result of the legal changes, the gross salary of a constitutional judge will be 40,950 lei, and the net salary will be 32,793 lei. The gross salary of the President of the Court will be 45,000 lei, and the net salary36,036 lei. The gross salary for the legal assistants will be 9,198 lei.
