Work has begun to build a radiotherapy complex at the Cancer Institute. Featuring two linear accelerators and a brachytherapy system, the facility will ensure extended patient access to advanced radiotherapy procedures.
Minister of Health Ala Nemerenco stated that linear accelerators are needed for the oncology patients who are currently served in radiotherapy treatment by a single piece of equipment. The Cancer Institute has two pieces of equipment, but one purchased in 2009 is under repair.
Thanks to a project financed by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and the International Atomic Energy Agency, a new linear accelerator was purchased for treating both Moldovan citizens and refugees from Ukraine. The presence of a third system will significantly reduce waiting lines and increase the chances of survival of patients. The functionality of the system, however, is conditioned by the existence of a radiotherapeutic complex to be built with the support of external partners, the Ministry of Health states.
The radiotherapeutic complex, worth a total of about 59 million lei, will have an area of 932 square meters. The costs of the construction will be covered by the U.S. Government and the funds of the National Health Insurance Company.
