Contest-lessons for detainees suffering from TB
The prisoners suffering from tuberculosis will attend a number of lessons on the prophylaxis and treatment of tuberculosis during March 22-31. The lessons form part of the “Week of Knowledge about Tuberculosis” and were organized to mark the World TB Day celebrated on March 24, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting the National TB/AIDS Coordination Council.
The detainees will watch the movie “Tuberculosis” produced by the Royal Netherlands Tuberculosis Association (KNCV) and will then answer a number of questions on this topic. For correct answers, the prisoners will be given T-shirts, cups, tea packets, notebooks, informative materials. Earlier, they received leaflets about the treatment of tuberculosis, the advantages of uninterruptedly following the drug treatment and the negative consequences for health when the treatment is interrupted.
The event aims to contribute to a higher number of patients receiving treatment for TB by informing them and form a correct attitude towards the cure of this disease. 6% of the prisoners in Moldova abandon this treatment.
Activities dedicated to the World TB Day are organized in penitentiaries the sixth consecutive day. Every time they are different and include: contests of wall newspapers, contest-lotteries for the healthy prisoners, workshops, seminars, etc.
There are five specialized institutions were the detainees suffering from tuberculosis receive treatment: the Penitentiary Hospital No.16 in Pruncul (about 80% of the patients), the medical sections in the Penitentiary No.17 in Rezina, the Penitentiary No.13 in Chisinau, the Penitentiary No. 11 in Balti and the Penitentiary No. 5 in Cahul. About 280 prisoners are now treated for TB.
Moldova is one of the countries that are most affected by tuberculosis, with a TB rate of 120 patients per 100,000 people (in 2008). It is one of the top 18 countries facing acute multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis
