“Coppélia” to be staged at National Opera House

One of the most impressive ballets– “Coppélia” – will be put on at the National Opera House in Chisinau on October 8. Cristina Zara, coordinating editor of the National Opera House’s Artistic Impresario Division, has told Info-Prim Neo that the ballet in three acts is based on a novel by Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann. Music was written by Léo Delibes. The ballet is about a girl named Coppelia who sits on her balcony all day reading, speaking to no one. A boy named Franz falls deeply in love with her and wants to marry her, even though he is already engaged. His fiance, Swanhilda, sees Franz throwing kisses at Coppelia. Swanhilda soon learns that Coppelia is actually a doll that belongs to Doctor Coppelius, the mad scientist. She decides to impersonate the doll, in order to win the love of Franz. Chaos ensues, but all is soon forgiven. Swanhilda and Franz make up and get married. The marriage is celebrated with several festive dances. Choreography is arranged by Marius Petipa and Enrico Cecchetti. The main parts are played by Anastasia Homitskaya (Swanhilda), Anatolie Ustimov (Franz), and Igor Gherciu (Coppelius). The scenery and costumes were made by Marina Socolova from Moscow. The orchestra is directed by Marin Balan. The performance starts at 4pm. Tickets cost between 30 and 180 lei.
