Corneliu Gurin: PGO must be immediately freed from political influence

Prosecutor General Corneliu Gurin in a press beefing said that the freeing of the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) from political influence is a top priority as it is namely the political pressure that affects the prosecutors’ work most of all, IPN reports.

Corneliu Gurin said the latest events made him realize that he was right when he accepted the post of prosecutor general. “It is very important to keep the institution far from political influence, while the people should regain confidence in the PGO,” he stated.

The prosecutor general avoided commenting on the Constitutional Court’s decision by which his dismissal by Parliament was declared unconstitutional. He only said that in fact the ruling parties aimed not to suspend him, but to exert influence on the PG.

On May 3, the MPs of the PLDM and PCRM voted in favor of removing Corneliu Gurin from the post two weeks after he was named prosecutor general. On May 20, the Constitutional Court ruled that this decision taken by the legislature was unconstitutional.
