Cristina Iovu wins bronze at weightlifting
Weightlifter Cristina Iovu won Moldova’s first medal at the 2012 Olympic Games. On Sunday, July 29, the athlete won the bronze in the 53 kg category, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Iovu’s combined result in snatch and clean and jerk was 219 kg. Taipei’s Shu-Chung Hsu obtained the same result, but took the second place because she was 300 grams lighter than Iovu. The gold was won by Kazakhstan’s Zulfiya Chinshanlo, who set a new Olympic record with 231 kg.
For her achievement, Cristina Iovu will receive €70,000 and an apartment.
Meanwhile, in the boxing competition Moldova’s Vasile Belous reached the 1/8 finals with a clear victory against Tanzania’s Selemani Kidunda, 20-7. In the next round, Belous will meet the reigning champion, Ukraine’s Taras Selestiuk.
The other Moldovans failed to impress on Sunday. Marina Zgurscaia occupied the 27th place in the shooting (pistol, 10 meters) competition and didn’t qualify for the final. Tatiana Chisca failed to progress beyond the preliminary round in swimming, finishing 40th out of 46 participants.
Today, July 30, Moldova won’t be represented by any athlete.
The medals table is topped by China with 6 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze. Moldova shares the 22th place with 9 other countries that have only a bronze medal.
