When crossing the state border of Moldova, the persons and baggage are scanned for radiation and nuclear threats. For the purpose, within a project implemented with the financial support of the U.S., special monitors were installed at 22 customs posts, while the Customs Service was equipped with a mobile radiation detection system. The equipment installed at the Chisinau International Airport was presented in an inaugural ceremony on April 6, IPN reports.
Customs Service director general Vitalie Vrabie said the technical and methodological assistance from which the Customs Service benefitted by this project contributed to the improvement of the institution’s capacities to prevent radiation and nuclear accidents.
Head of the Border Police Department Fredolin Lecari expressed his conviction that the utilization of the new equipment will bring value added to the common efforts of the authorities responsible for the prevention and combating of transfrontier crime.
A number of exercises to stimulate the detection of radioactive substances and explosives were staged within the event.
The installation of equipment at the 22 customs posts started in 2013. The mobile system of the Customs Service became available this year and consists of six motor vehicles with special equipment for detecting radioactive substances. The budget of the project totals US$ 17 million.
