Day against Drug Abuse to be celebrated June 26

The Day against Drug Abuse will be marked in Moldova on June 26. The MPs on May 24 adopted a bill to supplement the Decision concerning commemorative days, holidays and nonworking days in the Republic of Moldova, IPN reports.

The bill was drafted by a group of Socialist MPs who said the goal is to encourage the young people and the population in general to value health and to exclude drugs from their life. According to the authors, this day should be celebrated each year by specific events so as to raise awareness of this problem.

The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is  observed worldwide on June 26. According to statistics, about 200 million people take drugs at least once a year globally. Approximately 25 million people are addicted to drugs. Each year, 200,000 people die from diseases associated with drugs.

In Moldova, drug consumption among teens increased from 8% to 19% during the past three years, according to the International Antidrug Center.
