Daybreak protest at Chisinau City Hall

Employees of the Chisinau Electric Transport Company blocked the entrance to the City Hall early this morning, demanding that the company’s director Gheorghe Morgoci be dismissed and that the meeting of the Chisinau Municipal Council be continued, Info-Prim Neo reports. “We can no more tolerate the disorder and injustice at the company and the local public authorities’ indifference,” said the head of the trade union committee “Calatorul” Ion Caterov. “We have come to the City Hall for many months, but none of the officials responded to our requests. We will stage a general strike in the hope that we will attract the authorities’ attention,” Ion Caterov said. “Many of the employees are on unpaid, forced leave, while the salaries have been halved.” The employees are split into two camps. Some of them support the former director Vasile Rudai, who won the contest for the post of director held by the CMC, while the others – the current director Gheorghe Morgoci, who was named by order of the mayor general of Chisinau. Laurenţiu Rajalo, a trade union leader who supports Morgoci, said that the director is not to blame for the precarious situation of the company. “Some of the municipal councilors deliberately delay solving our problems, including the approval of the new trolleybus fare. They want chaos and disorder. The lack of finances is the major problem, not the director,” he said. The protesters started to collect signatures for the CMC to hold an extraordinary meeting, but none of the City Hall officials came out to talk to them. Ion Caterov said that if the authorities do not take measures, the employees of the Chisinau Electric Transport Company will come out on general strike.
