Politicians, historians, and prominent figures of the cultural life of Moldova laid flowers today to the graves of the parliamentarians of Sfatul Tarii (Council of the Country), who voted for Bessarabia’s unification with Romania 92 years ago, on March 1918, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Constantin Jardan-Botnaru, one of the men who look after the graves of the Sfatul Tarii deputies, said only 10 such graves are believed to have remained at the Central Cemetery after the Eternity Memorial was built nearby; it is presumed that at least 4 other graves were destroyed during the construction.
Attending the flower-laying ceremony, author Nicolae Dabija said the 1918 Union was the greatest holiday of the Romanian nation. “Today we are waiting for another March 27, which I think is predestined for us from above”.
Constantin Lazar, the chairman of the Association of Romanian citizens in Moldova, says a great elevation of spirits can be observed today among Bessarabia’s Romanians.
Deputy Prime Minister Ion Negrei, who is also a historian, says that apart from being an occasion for commemoration, March 27 is also a topical observance. “The Unification was an act of integration of the region encompassed between the Prut and the Nistru into Europe. Today the governing Alliance for European Integration has a similar goal, to integrate Moldova into the EU”, declared Ion Negrei.
The celebrations marking the 1918 Unification in Chisinau include a mass officiated by the head of the Bessarabian Church, His Holiness Petru.
