“We are concerned that diabetes affects more and more youth and children, but we are also pleased that the authorities take care of these sufferers and offer them the needed assistance”, said Aliona Serbulenco, head of the Health Ministry's Public Healthcare Department.
Academician Zinaida Anestiadi said the people at an increased risk of developing diabetes are the relatives of diabetes sufferers, the people aged over 40 years, obese people, and the women who give birth to children weighing over 4-4.5 kilograms. The classical symptoms of diabetes are polyuria (frequent urination), polydipsia (increased thirst) and polyphagia (increased hunger).
Sugar diabetes is a disease that cannot be cured completely but can be kept under control through appropriate treatment and lifestyle adjustments. The sufferers should include in their diet fruit, vegetables, low fat food, lots of liquid, and exclude salt, dairy products and of course sugar and sugar-based sweets.
There are 35,000 diabetes sufferers in Moldova, including 12,000 in Chisinau. 250 million people worldwide suffer from diabetes and the figure is forecast to reach 380 million by 2020.
