Discrimination against women with disabilities is a sad reality in Moldova, statement

The discrimination against women with disabilities is a sad reality in the Republic of Moldova. These women are discriminated in the relations with state institutions, are excluded from the labor market and cannot take part in the political life, UN Women Representative to Moldova Asya Varbanova said in the opening of the national forum of women with disabilities on October 23, IPN reports.

Asya Varbanova noted that the women with disabilities make up 48% of the persons with disabilities in Moldova. They are active, have potential to change something and can contribute to developing the community and the country. These women have ideas that should be put into practice, should be analyzed and taken into account when state policies are worked out.

According to the UN Women Representative, even if steps have been taken to combat discrimination against women with disabilities in Moldova, a lot is yet to be done. The broader representation of women will contribute to better observance of human rights in the Republic of Moldova. “This will lead to a more prosperous and richer society. Moldova will become a better place for all the categories of people. In 2030, Moldova should be a country where all the rights are respected and no one remains helpless,” stated Asya Varbanova.

Attending the opening of the national forum, Prime Minister Pavel Filip said the event entitled “We have abilities and want possibilities” signifies the necessity of a constructive dialogue so as to identify and remove the existing barriers and constraints and to offer equal chances to all Moldovans. “When we speak about equal chances for women and all the persons with disabilities, it is important not only to have a law in this regard, but to also implement it,” stated Pavel Filip, assuring that there is no reticence at the level of state institutions.

The national forum of women with disabilities is organized by the Association of Women Entrepreneurs with Disabilities of Moldova with the assistance of the UN program “Women in Politics” and with financial support from the Government of Sweden.
