Dorin Recean: Stereotype that all police officers in Moldova are corrupt will be dispelled

The stereotype that all the police officers in Moldova are corrupt will be soon dispelled, said Minister of the Interior Dorin Recean. According to him, the first step that will lead to the diminution of corruption in the system will be the employment of policemen on a contest basis, Info-Prim Neo reports. “We shouldn’t have this stereotype that all the police officers are corrupt. This is not true. There are many police officers who are honest, who catch criminals red-handed and expose themselves to risks. There is a small number of corrupt policemen, who do not do their duty. Despite being few, they create a negative image,” the minister said in a program on Radio Moldova. Dorin Recean also said that 700 police officers have been dismissed and the amendments made to the legislation recently will enable to hire only decent policemen in the future. “The law allows testing the integrity of those who are corrupt and unsuitable and to remove them from the system,” stated Dorin Recean. The bill that defines the duties and status of the police officer, which was passed by Parliament in the first reading on December 14, says that the policemen will be assessed on a regular basis by tests and will be offered bribe to see how they behave when they do not know that it is a set-up.
