Drought and rain damages assessed at 900 million lei
The drought earlier this summer and the recent heavy rains caused damages estimated at 900 million lei, announced Agriculture Minister Vasile Bumacov at a meeting of the Emergencies Commission on Friday. Agricultural produce output was estimated to have dropped by at least 5%, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Prime Minister Vlad Filat, who chairs the Commission, requested a more detailed analysis of the situation and maximally objective estimates for each sector separately.
State Weather Service director Ilie Boian informed the Commission that in the first decade of July the ground surface temperature rose from 63 to 71 degrees Celsius, a record high in the last 30 years. Boian also assured that despite the hot weather no problems with water supply should appear, as the water impounded in dams was sufficient. Moreover, further rains are expected on Sunday and Monday.
