Poet Dumitru Matcovschi passed away in the evening of June 26 at the age of 73. His death was confirmed by relatives, IP reports.
Over the last few weeks, he had stayed in the hospital after undergoing surgery on the brain. The brain tumour was caused by a number of factors, including a serious brain injury sustained as a result of a road accident that happened 24 years ago, the intense work done by him, and his precarious living conditions. A council of doctors convened daily to examine the poet’s state of health.
Poet, prose writer, dramatist, publicist and academician Dumitru Matcovschi started to write in 1966 and is the author of more than 50 volumes of poetry, prose and plays. He is considered a symbol of the national renaissance movement of Bessarabia.
Dumitru Matcovschi will be buried in his native village
Dumitru Matcovschi will be buried in his native village Vadul Rascov of Soldanesti district on June 29. This was the late poet’s wish, writer Ianos Turcanu, who is a family friend, has told IPN.
Those who will want to bid farewell to the poet can do it in the evening of June 27 at Saint Dumitru Church that is situated in Chisinau’s Botanica district. On Friday, June 28, the poet will be taken to his native village, where he will be buried the next day.
“He wanted to be buried at home. It was his wish expressed before death. His wonderful daughters and wife will do as he wanted,” stated Ianos Turcanu.

The passing away of poet Dumitru Matcovschi is an immeasurable loss for the Bessarabian people. It leaves an enormous gap in our literature and history because Dumitru Matcovschi was not only a poet, dramatist and prose writer, but also a fortress man and an emblematic figure for the National Renaissance Movement in Bessarabia, said the president of the Writers Union of Moldova Arcadie Suceveanu, quoted by IPN.
Arcadie Suceveanu stated that Dumitru Matcovschi will remain in the people’s memory as a poet who wrote very beautiful poems about the maternal feeling and the beauty of the Romanian language. He will be also remembered as a poet who condemned imposture and lies about the life in Bessarabia along history.
The president of the Writers Union also said that Dumitru Matcovschi assumed Bessarabia’s destiny and identified himself with the history and tragedy of this people. Matcovschi’s poems were created from the tears of Bessarabia. The poet will remain in history as a symbol of courage and dignity and as a promoter of the cleanest and highest national ideals.

Dumitru Matcovschi always knew how to gain confidence and to provide support. He was a rare hearty man who loved culture and loved to be surrounded by people, artistic conductor of the academic ensemble of folk dances “Joc” Vladimir Curbet has told IPN.
“I knew him very well. He was a man with a great heart. He deeply cared about this piece of land. You could always discuss and share the sorrows with him. God rest his soul,” said Vladimir Curbet.
He added that the late poet attended frequently the ensemble’s concerts. “He came often to our concerts. He always admired and praised us,” stated Vladimir Curbet.

Dumitru Matcovschi died with his heart bleeding. During the last few years, he was preoccupied with what happened in the political and social spheres. He didn’t complain that he encountered problems and had a difficult life as he lived on the eighth floor at the City’s Gates. He was always interested in what was going on in the Government and Parliament, said writer Ianos Turcanu, who is a family friend.
According to Ianos Turcanu, his talent saved him. “He surely was beaten and slapped. His books were not published. He always struggled. The last years were the saddest ones as he saw that nothing changed and he fought in vain for what he fought and hoped. He passed away unhappy because his country is unhappy,” the writer stated for IPN.
Ianos Turcanu said that Dumitru Matcovschi wasn’t supported during his life, but his talent helped him. “He spent the most beautiful moments at home, at the working table, or at the editorial office. When I got acquainted with him, I was resting on the seaside and he worked there too,” he added.
In May 1989, Dumitru Matcovschi was involved in a serious road accident as a result of which he had been in a coma for a long period. Doctors said then that his survival was a miracle. Afterward, he underwent 20 operations. Earlier this month he was operated on the brain as he had a brain tumor. The poet died in the evening of June 26.
Dumitru Matcovschi is the author of over 50 volumes of poetry, prose and plays. He is a member of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. President Traian Basescu conferred the Cultural Merit Order in the Literature category on him.

MPs observe a moment’s silence in memory of Dumitru Matcovschi
The lawmakers observed a moment’s silence in memory of Dumitru Matcovschi, who departed this life last night. MP Ion Hadarca said the funeral day should be declared a national mourning day, IPN reports.
“Last night was a national mourning night as Dumitru Matcovschi’s heart stopped beating. It is a great loss for the nation. He kept the national dignity flame burning. Since the 1970s until present, the plays of dramatist Matcovschi made the headlines at the National Theater. His novels were translated into a number of languages,” said Ion Hadarca, adding that Dumitru Matcovschi’s articles brought new vigor to the National Renaissance Movement.
The lawmaker also said that the tragic accident of May 1989, as a result of which he developed a brain tumor, marked the poet’s personality. “Nichita Stanescu said the poet was a speaking blood stain. This was Matcovschi’s creed. I think that the funeral day should be declared a national mourning day all over the Romanian area,” stated Ion Hadarca.

Chisinau street may be named Dumitru Matcovschi
A street in Chisinau can bear the name of Dumitru Matcovschi. The municipality also plans to set up a bust in memory of the poet. The suggestions were made by Mayor General of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca, IPN reports.
The mayor said that some of the homes of culture or education institutions may be also renamed. “We want to do these things in a decent manner. We will involve the family so as to make sure that the poet’s good name is not affected. Dumitru Matcovschi is the golden pantheon of Moldova and the whole Romanian area,” he added.
Municipal councilor and stage manger Sandu Grecu said Dumitru Matcovschi was an example of modesty that should be followed by some of the politicians. The poet passed away satisfied with what he left behind, but he suffered a lot because of the political situation in the country.
Program of poet Dumitru Matcovschi’s funeral
Dumitru Matcovschi will be buried in his native village, according to his will. The program of the funeral was worked out by a state commission headed by Prime Minister Iurie Leanca, IPN reports, quoting a communiqué from the Government.
On June 27 at 7pm, the poet will be taken to Saint Dumitru Church that is situated at 3/1 Traian St in Botanica district. Everyone will have access to bid farewell to the bard.
On June 28 at 9am, a funeral service will be held at Saint Dumitru Church, while at 11am the coffin will be taken to the Azure Hall of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. At 2pm, the poet’s friends and admirers will be able to give speeches and say goodbye to the poet there.
On June 2 at 11am, Dumitru Matcovschi will be buried at the cemetery in Vadul-Rascov village in Soldanesti district, which is the poet’s place of birth.
