Emissions in cities accelerate climate change
The cities are sources of emissions that accelerate climate change. In Moldova, as in many other states, the motor vehicles are the main pollutants of the air in urban areas. They account for over 90% of the total volume of emissions. The information was provided in a conference held at the Ministry of the Environment on the occasion of the World Habitat Day that is marked on the first Monday of October, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Deputy Minister of the Environment Lazar Chirica said the industrial companies, thermoelectric plants, boiler rooms and wastewater treatment stations are also sources of pollution.
“In order to remedy the situation, steps should be taken to reduce air pollution from all sources, including from burning leaves and vegetal waste. There should be also reduced greenhouse gas emissions and the volume of transport emissions and created and maintained the green and recreational areas,” said the deputy minister.
Elina Plesca, first vice director of the State Hydrometeorology Service, said that according to the data of the Chisinau meteorology station, the average temperature increased by 0.8 degrees Celsius in 1886-2011. During the last 20 years, Moldova has witnessed eight explosions of high annual mean temperatures, the winters being significantly warmer.
The temperature in urban areas is much higher than in rural areas, especially in summer. The relative humidity is in general lower than in the vicinity of the cities. The speed of the wind is also lower than in rural areas.
The World Habitat Day has been observed since 1985.
