Epidemiologists warn about increased risk of infection with campylobacter

Epidemiologists warn the population about the increased risk of infection with campylobacter. The disease occurs throughout the year, but is more intense in the warm period. According to epidemiologist of the Chisinau Public Health Center of the Public Health Agency Adriana Jitari, campylobacter is among the most frequent infectious bacteria that cause systemic and acute diarrheal diseases, IPN reports.

The diseases appears at all ages, especially in children younger than five and young adults. Among grownups, campylobacteriosis is more often met among villagers and persons whose work is associated with domestic animals and poultry. The infection is contagious and spreads rapidly by direct contact. The first symptoms appear in ten days.

Most often, the disease is transmitted by food, like non-pasteurized milk and meat that is insufficiently treated thermally. The symptoms include stomachache, sometimes with cramps, diarrhea, dizziness , vomiting and fever. The clinical manifestations determined by campylobacter do not differ from those caused by other bacterial pathogens of acute diarrheal diseases, such as Salmonella and Shighella. Infection can be prevented by respecting the personal hygiene rules, by washing hands as often as possible.

The first cases of campylobacteriosis in the municipality of Chisinau were reported last autumn. So far this year, there were recorded three cases in children younger than three.
