Moldova is among the Eastern Partnership member countries that will benefit from EU assistance for mitigating and adapting to climate change and in moving towards a low-emissions and climate-resilient economy. The EU4Climate Moldova Project has been launched today in Chisinau.
Over the next four years (2019-2022), the project will support Moldova to take concrete actions against climate change in line with the Paris Climate Agreement and to improve climate policies and legislation. Its ambition is to limit climate change’s negative impacts on citizens’ lives and make society more resilient to it as a whole. EU4Climate will also help Moldova to implement a rigorous reporting system to reduce greenhouse gases emissions.
Valentina Țapeș, state secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, said Moldova has committed itself to reaching by 2030 the unconditional greenhouses gases emission reduction target of at least 64% compared to the 1990 level. That reduction commitment could eventually increase up to 78%, provided the availability of low-cost financing, technology transfer and technical cooperation with developed countries. “Global warming is the biggest threat to human development, and humankind has never faced such a huge threat before”, stated Valentina Țapeș.
EU Ambassador Peter Michalko noted that in the over the last decade the European Union allocated around 580 million euros for actions related to environment, climate, energy efficiency and renewable energy in the Eastern partner countries. According to the diplomat, the EU4Climate project will allow Moldova to join EU efforts for creating a better future and cleaner environment for children and future generations.
Dima Al-Khatib, UNDP Resident Representative to Moldova, said that UNDP supports countries to implement ambitious climate change measures and work towards a future which is resilient, inclusive and sustainable for all. “The launching of the EU4Climate project creates a new momentum and presents new opportunities for climate action in the region. It is an important and highly valued project for Eastern Partnership countries, including the Republic of Moldova,” said Dima Al-Khatib.
With a total budget of 8.8 million euros, the EU4Climate Project will support climate-related policies in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. It is estimated , Moldova will receive more than 1 million euros under the project.
