European Commission offers €13m to Moldova for developing villages

The European Commission transferred integrally the tranche of €13 million within the Sector Budget Support Program “Economic Stimulation in Rural Areas” in Moldova, IPN reports.

The Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Pirkka Tapiola told a news conference that the cases when the European Commission transfers the tranche fully are not often, while in the case of Moldova this shows that all the conditions were met.

The objective of the program is to improve the economic policies at national and sector levels, to boost businesses in rural areas and to increase transparency, responsibility and efficiency of the public finances management systems.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Valeriu Lazar said the program is very important for Moldova. “One of the most serious challenges of the country is to stop migration and the partners help us to cope with them. This program will help revitalize villages,” he stated.

The total EU support within the Sector Budget Support Program “Economic Stimulation in Rural Areas” for 2010-2014 is €72 million. Until now Moldova received €42 million.
