Exhibition dedicated to Chernobyl catastrophe inaugurated by Ukrainian Embassy

The Ukrainian embassy to Chisinau inaugurated an exhibition of about 30 works by painter Serghei Sulin, on Thursday, dedicated to the 23rd anniversary of the nuclear accident Chernobyl, Info-Prim Neo reports. The works are made by using three techniques: graphics, painting and mixed technique. The whole collection is named “Reporting from Chernobyl.” Serghei Sulin says they mirror his emotional state after his Chernobyl experience, since he was among the Moldovans having participated in liquidating the consequences of the blast. The artist says, after his Ukrainian experience, he started to paint only in black and white. It's difficult for him to use colors. “In my pictures showing Chisinau in spring, with blossoming trees, I wanted to render the beauty we can be deprived of any time by a tragedy like the one from Chernobyl,” the painter specified. Serhei Pirozhkov, Ukraine's ambassador to Moldova, has said the Chernobyl catastrophe has had severe consequences and influenced the vital interests of many countries. “Chernobyl is a tragedy without time limit. Time is never going to cure the suffering and pain of the people living there or having come to liquidate the consequences,” he said, adding that he appreciated Serghei Sulin's works. According to the president of the Chernobyl Association from Moldova, Tudor Capatana, the works are especially valuable, though depicting a tragic event. “I am proud for Serghei Sulin, because he started to created beautiful things and was not discouraged by having to suffer because of this tragic event,” Capatana said. The pictures will be exhibited in the Cultural Information Center of the Ukrainian Embassy to Chisinau, on 31 August str. The oil paintings can be bought at least for 200 euros. The Chernobyl catastrophe occurred at night on April 26, 1986. It polluted an area of over 145,000 sq. km in Ukraine, Belarus and Russia, as some 5 million people are deemed to have suffered from it. 3,550 Moldovans participated in liquidating the consequences, as one in six of them has already died.
