Family fights corruption at Moldova's Railways

Ludmila and Anatol Neagu, former employees of Moldova's Railways, say the state-run company is hit by corruption. In order to be reinstated as train head, Anatol Neagu sued his superior Nicolae Buza, who, according to him, has fake diplomas and is protected by Minister of Transport and Road Management Anatol Salaru. In a news conference held at Info-Prim Neo on July 16, Anatol Neagu said in March he was fired from the post of train head on the Chisinau – Moscow route after working for 20 years. He stated he does not know the exact reasons why he was dismissed so that he sued the head of the Passenger Service Division Nicolae Buza. The Neagu family says Nicolae Buza is the protégé of Minister Anatol Salaru and has fake diplomas as he finished only nine grades. Anatol Neagu said seven hearings were held, but neither Nicolae Buza nor his lawyer attended them. He hopes yet he will be reinstated in his post as a result of the next hearing scheduled for July 23. “We discussed with Minister Anatol Salaru, but he told us it is not within his competence to check the diplomas of the employees of Moldova's Railways,” said Ludmila Neagu, stressing the police in 2008 established that Nicolae Buza's documents were fake, but did not take measures. Ludmila Neagu said she was not fired, but she resigned because she was afraid to work with Nicolae Buza. Until recently, she worked as dining car head on the Chisinau – Moscow route. After her husband was dismissed, she was moved to a new train, on the Chisinau – Saint Petersburg route. She said other employees told them they will be able to return to their posts only if they offer bribe. Ludmila and Anatol do not know how much they have to pay, but say the bribes at Moldova's Railway are “the larger the better”. Anatol Neagu said though he was a member of the Liberal Democratic Party, Prime Minister Vlad Filat, who heads the PLDM, did not react to the letters sent by his family. The Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office took no steps either. “We hoped the situation will change with the coming to power of the Liberal parties, but the political corruption continues to dominate the state institutions,” said Ludmila Neagu. Ludmila and Anatol Neagu have six children, three of whom are minors. Two of the six children were adopted.
