Family with visual impairments seeks help in finding dwelling

A family whose members have impaired vision asks the authorities to intervene and help it find a dwelling. The Protiuc couple and their two children, all invalids of the first disability degree, live temporarily in a three-room apartment in Chisinau that was given to them by the Society of the Blind. Now they have to vacate it, Info-Prim Neo reports. Before coming to Chisinau, the family had lived in a hostel room in Balti for 12 years. The Protiuc couple said it was cold and damp there and there were no sanitary facilities and water. “We have the right to live in better conditions,” Stanislav Protiuc told a news conference on March 10. The family lives on state allowances that amount to 2,470 lei a month. Thus, they cannot purchase or even rent an apartment. They have been in the Society of the Blind's list of persons entitled to better living conditions for about 10 years. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, the chairman of the Society of the Blind of Moldova Dumitru Sclifos said the organization he represents does not provide apartments to socially deprived families as this is the responsibility of the state. The apartment was offered to the Protiuc family on a temporary basis, for the period during which one member of the family received treatment in Chisinau. Dumitru Sclifos said the family received earlier an apartment from the state in Donduseni, but they sold it when they moved to Balti.
