Fast of Peter and Paul under way

The Orthodox Christians on June 24 start the Apostles' Fast, also called the Fast of the Holy Apostles and the Fast of Peter and Paul. The fast always begins on the Monday after the Sunday of All Saints and continues until the feast of the Apostles Peter and Paul that is celebrated on July 12, IPN reports.

The Apostles Fast is not as severe as Great Lent or the Dormition Fast, but entails fasting from red meat, poultry, meat products, eggs, dairy products, fish, oil, and wine. For many Orthodox people, fish, wine and oil are allowed on each Saturday and Sunday.

The length of the fast is variable, being determined by the date of Easter. Eight weeks after Easter comes the Sunday of All Saints. The next day, Monday, the Fast of the Holy Apostles begins. The Fast lasts until the Feast of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul.

The Church urges the parishioners to fast bodily and spiritually as well and to pray more, to repent and to taker communion so as to have their sins forgiven.

As in the case of the other fasting period, they do not have wedding parties in the period. If the feast of the Apostles Peter and Paul that is always observed on July 12 falls on a Wednesday or a Thursday, fish, wine and oil are allowed on this day.
