Fatal swimming contest

A man in Orac village, Leova district, drowned in the local pond when he and two friends decided to compete who would swim first to the other bank. He apparently overestimated his forces and drowned. Liliana Puscasu, press officer of the Civil Protection and Exception Situations Service, told Info-Prim Neo that his body was recovered the second day by divers. The mayor of Orac, Ion Cvasnei, told Info-Prim Neo the man was 47 years old and had moved in Orac from Hancesti after marrying a local woman. He was unemployed, but helped the villagers with odd jobs. On the day of the tragedy, he went with two friends to bring hay for his horse. After mowing, the three men decided to swim. The man's friends say they looked back when they reached the bank, but didn’t see him anymore. According to data of the Civil Protection and Exception Situations Service, 109 have drowned in Moldova this year, including 11 children.
