Fiodor Ghelici goes on hunger strike

The head of “Moldova Mea” Association Fiodor Ghelici, who was arrested for trafficking in human beings, hasn’t eaten and drunk anything in the remand center where he is held for six days, the activist’s elder son Serghei Ghelici announced in a news conference at IPN. According to him, his father cannot stand up, feels dizzy and cannot be visited by relatives and friends if only in the presence of the lawyer. Fiodor Ghelici refuses medical assistance.

Serghei Ghelici said the Association “Moldova Mea” works legally and collected funds for treating children suffering from scoliosis, cancer and other serious diseases. The organization’s volunteers do not beg and do not perform other illegal activities as it was asserted. Last week, the house and office of Fiodor Ghelici were searched and there were confiscated documents and computers. According to Serghei Ghelici, his father is concerned that the documents may have been destroyed or falsified.

Serghei Ghelici underlined that the criminal case against his father was started by order of the former Premier Vlad Filat, who heads the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova.

In the same news conference, former Minister of Security Anatol Plugaru said the case was fabricated. “Vlad Filat must realize that he may be hit back. The power changes and he may be behind bars next time,” he stated.

The head of the Center for Supporting and Defending the Rights of Russian Co-nationals Valery Klimenko said the association headed by Ghelici includes dozens of volunteers, but the police started the criminal case based on the statements of two persons. According to him, the case was fabricated in order to remove Ghelici from the active public life.

Fiodor Ghelici is suspected of trafficking in persons through the organization he heads. He was put under arrest for 30 days. Earlier, Fiodor Ghelici anticipated that he will be arrested because of his activities and his public criticism.

The Association “Moldova Mea” intends to appeal to international organizations. According to the organization’s data, 88 volunteers collected over 90,000 lei during two months to support dozens of children suffering from diseases and persons in need.
