Fire weather warning issued as temperatures expected to hit 40ºC

A fire weather alert was issued to warn for an increased risk of fires, in particular in the southern part of Moldova, as temperatures during August 2-7 are expected to stay torrid and even hit the 40ºC mark. State Weather Service director Ilie Boian told Info-Prim Neo that the fire weather in the south is due to the fact that the southern districts saw the least of the rains that fell recently. He added that while further showers might fall in this period, they will be insignificant. “Stubble remained on fields after the wheat was harvested, and if someone sets it on fire or if lightnings strike it, large-scale fires can ensue”, said Ilie Boian, adding that strong gusts of wind could worsen the situation. During August 4-7 temperatures are predicted to stand at around 33-39ºC. Showers are expected in the north tomorrow, and in the south next week.
