Five single elderly people die from carbon monoxide poisoning

Two single women aged 93, two women aged 71 and 90 from the same village and a 71-year-old man perished in house fires on January 8.

Diana Turcan, press officer of the Civil Protection and Emergencies Service, has told IPN that neighbors of a woman aged 93 from Verejeni village of Ocnita district called the firemen at about 10am after seeing smoke coming out of the woman’s house. However, the fire extinguished by itself. The woman was found dead on the floor, with the bed linen destroyed by fire.

The elder woman aged 93, from Ilenuta, Falesti, died in a fire that expanded and destroyed partially the house’s roof. Firemen intervened to put the flames out.

The same day, a man aged 71 from Burlanesti, Edinet was discovered dead by neighbors. This lived alone and was purportedly poisoned by carbon monoxide emitted by the faulty stove.

Another two women, aged 71 and 90, from Cetarenii village of Ungheni district were also found dead in their homes. According to the preliminary examinations, they also died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

A couple aged 48 and 50 from Cahul town were hospitalized with poisoning. Most probably they were poisoned by gases emitted by the furnace installed in the house.

Two children of 5 and 7 from Cotelea, Briceni were also taken to the hospital with carbon monoxide poisoning.

Rescuers warn the population to obey the anti-fire rules so as to avoid fires and carbon monoxide poisonings. The elderly people and children must be supervised as they are the most vulnerable in emergencies.
