The use of torture in Moldova 'it's just normal' if no essential steps were taken to combat the use of torture by the police during the seven months after the April 7 events. In a news conference, Victor Suruceanu, the executive director of Amnesty International Moldova (AIM), said the given conclusions were formulated by a researcher of the International Secretariat of Amnesty International, who had been in Moldova after the April 5 elections and visited many penitentiaries.
According to lawyer Veaceslav Turcan, program coordinator at AIM, the researcher's conclusions on the situation concerning torture in Moldova were included in the report “Police torture and ill-treatment: 'It's just normal'”, which was presented by members of the AIM International Secretariat on November 30.
Veaceslav Turcan presented a number of recommendations from the international practice intended for the new Government. He said the authorities must ensure the objective and impartial investigation of the cases of torture, suspend the investigated police officers who used torture from posts, pay compensations to the victims of torture, etc.
