The Association of Former Deportees and Political Prisoners in Moldova requested government’s support in erecting more monuments in remembrance of those deported under the Stalinist regime. The demands were expressed during a meeting with Prime Minister Vlad Filat on Thursday, July 5, Info-Prim Neo.
Vlad Filat admitted that the money allotted yearly for former deportees was little, but he said this was only the first step. The Prime Minister is ready to use the Executive’s Reserve Fund if needed. “We’ll make sure that museums throughout the country have sections dedicated to the historical events in the times of deportations”, he promised.
“For years now, we have been searching for someone to help us transport a monument from Siberia, where our parents died. We built the monument, but we need money for transportation”, said a former deportee from Cantemir district.
Representatives of the Association of Former Deportees and Political Prisoners in Moldova thanked Vlad Filat for removing the barbed wire on the Prut and urged him to hurry the construction of the deportees’ monument that should be placed in the Railway Station Square in Chisinau. A former deportee asked for financial help for a surgery.
Former deportees received badges, cards and money. The meeting ended with a group photo in front of the Government building. Yearly, four million lei are allotted from the state budget for former deportees.
