Acting President Mihai Ghimpu will not take part in the seventh President's Cycling Cup that opened on June 11 as he will be participating in the European Conference of Heads of Parliament in Limassol, Cyprus. At the same time, former head of state Vladimir Voronin will be there, Info-Prim Neo reports.
In a news conference on June 11, Andrei Cimili, president of the National Cycling Federation, said both the former and present administrations are invited to the event, regardless of the political situation. He said Vladimir Voronin will be the special invitee. “Vladimir Voronin has always attended this event and contributed to its organization,”Andrei Cimili said.
He also said that more than one 1,000 cyclists will take part in the race this year. The event is to be included in the program of international contests for juniors. “The President's Cup can become a European contest and this is a good opportunity for Moldova,” Cimili said.
Alexandru Barciuc, vice president of the National Cycling Federation and head of the organizational committee, said there will be awarded two trophies – one to the winner in the cadets category, 15-16, and another one to the winner in the juniors category, 17-18. The trophy represent a bicycle made of bronze that is placed on a marble support. They were made by sculptor Gheorghe Postovanu. The winners will also receive by a Giant bicycle.
A sum of 500,000 lei was allocated for organizing and holding the contest. Deputy Minister of Youth and Sport Nicolae Andronache said the Ministry allotted 82,000 lei and will give one more trophy, to the youngest competitor.
Cyclists from Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria, Latvia, Kazakhstan, Russia, Ukraine, Armenia and Belarus are taking part in the racing tournament.
The event will close on June 13, when the race will be held in the center of Chisinau, starting at 11.00.
