Four doctors to be tried for not offering medical assistance to prisoner

Four doctors of Penitentiary No. 16 in Pruncul will stand trial for not providing medical assistance to a detainee who was physically ill-treated by members of the criminal organization “Makena”. The incident happened last February and resulted in the death of the person, IPN reports.

In a news conference on Friday, prosecutor Maxim Gropa said the doctors were investigated outside prison and continued to work at the penitentiary, receiving only a reprimand. The prosecutors will demand that the court should suspend them from posts.

The prosecutor stated that officials of the Department of Penitentiary Institutions are also involved in this case. The Prosecutor’s Office will provide details about them later.

Two of the four doctors deny having been involved in this incident. The other two didn’t explain their negligence. The doctors face up to three years in jail and may be also banned from holding a particular post or from carrying out particular activities for two to five years.

Maxim Gropa informed that the prosecutors also brought to trial 8 of the 17 employees of the Department of Penitentiary Institutions for abuse of power and influencing of witnesses and the injured party to make false statements.
