Anticorruption officers arrested four men on suspicion that they swindled a foreign investor out of €5 million. The four claimed they can influence officials of the Chisinau City Hall and SA Apa-Canal Chisinau so that they take a favorable decision as regards the allocation of a plot of land to the given company for erecting apartment buildings on it, Info-Prim Neo reports. The plot of 8.7 hectares situated on Mircea cel Batran Blvd. is municipal property. In 1999, it was leased out to SA Apa-Canal Chisinau. Mihai Cojocaru, division head at the Center for Combating Corruption and Economic Crimes, told a news conference that the suspects – two real estate agents and two intermediaries, one of whom a former employee of the Security and Information Service – were arrested when they were taking €370,000 from the investor’s representative. During a search, the anticorruption officers also found €50,000 and 550,000 lei that were transmitted earlier. An investigation is underway to establish if the four persons indeed had influence over the persons they said. The four suspects are now held at the Center’s remand division. They face between 3 and 7 years in jail. They do not accept their blame. One of them was earlier investigated in a case concerning the allocation of plots to combatants.
