Four persons killed in fires blamed on burning cigarettes
Two neighbors and drinking companions got poisoned with carbon monoxide and fumes emitted by the bed clothes that caught fire from a burning cigarette. Dorina Cruc, spokeswoman for the Civil Protection and Emergencies Service, has told Info-Prim Neo that the tragedy happened in Chirsova village in southern Moldova.
The two men, aged 51 and 43, were seen drinking alcohol in the house of one of them. In the evening, another neighbor came to ask for a cigarette and found the two men dead on the floor.
The investigators established the fire was caused by a dropped cigarette. The men woke up and tried to get out, but did not manage to. The house owners' wife and daughter work in Moscow. The other man lived nearby with his daughter and nephew.
Two more fires caused by burning cigarettes killed a 59-year-old man from Briceni town and a man aged 81 from Usurei village of Rascani district.
The 302 fires that happened in Moldova this year claimed 58 lives.
