Four repeat applications to register initiative groups

The Central Electoral Commission received four repeat applications to register presidential initiative groups in support of Alexandru Arseni, Vasile Tarlev, Ludmila Corsun and Vasile Bolea.

In the last two cases, the Commission said the groups will not be registered, since the repeat applications failed to remedy the irregularities found in the original ones.

CEC president Angelica Caraman told reporters on Saturday that, in the case of Alexandru Arseni, a document was presented proving that had given up his party membership long before he filed for registration. Therefore, the CEC decided to register his initiative group and issue subscription lists for the group to collect signatures.

In the case of Vasile Tarlev, the CEC will examine the application within the established term. Unlike the first application, when Vasile Tarlev ran independently, in the second he is running on behalf of the Future of Moldova Party.

And in the case of Valentin Borodachi, the CEC has not yet adopted a final decision, considering that the he withdrew his original application and then submitted another one.

August 31 is the last day for initiative groups supporting presidential candidates to file for registration with the Central Electoral Commission.  Only successfully registered groups may collect signatures allowing candidates to run for president.
