The Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Moldova will stage a series of activities to promote renewable energy in the central park of Chisinau until June 10. The fourth EU Sustainable Energy Week in Moldova was launched on June 6, IPN reports.
Head of the EU Delegation Peter Michalko said the event is organized to disseminate good practices and to inspire ideas for developing the energy sector. The global objective is to make sure that 20% of the energy consumption is produced from renewable sources and to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 25% until 2020. “By modernizing this sector, we want to consolidate the energy security of the Republic of Moldova. The sums saved through energy efficiency will be used for positive investments and the citizens will pay less for the consumed energy,” said the official.
According to Peter Michalko, the share of renewable energy increased in Moldova during the past few years, but a lot is yet to be done. In this regard, there should be implemented the law on the promotion of the use of renewable energy that would bring more projects to the sector. “A new law on energy efficiency is to be adopted soon by Parliament. This new law stimulates the reduction in losses in the system, the construction of more energy efficient buildings, the rehabilitation of old buildings so as to make them more energy efficient,” he stated.
Attending the launch, Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Kiril Gaburici sad energy efficiency and use of renewable sources of energy are key objectives for the Republic of Moldova given that the energy produced from renewable sources now represents only 2%. “The higher is the rate of renewable energy production, the greater will be our independence,” stated the minister.
The EU Sustainable Energy Week was launched by the European Commission in 2006. In Moldova, the event is staged for the four time.
