In an open, democratic society, the functioning capacity of the state institutions depends on the cooperation with the NGO sector. For its part, the NGO sector must take a more active part in the activities of the state powers. The issue was discussed in a roundtable meeting themed “NGO sector and decisional factors: realities and prospects” that was held at the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, IPN reports.

Doctor of Philosophy Ion Rusandu said that civil society plays a vital role in ensuring and widening democracy. It represents the foundations of participatory democracy and takes part in decision making through the agency of foundations, associations, and NGOs.

Deputy head of the Institute for Legal and Political Research of the Academy of Sciences Victor Juc said that civil society in Moldova does not take an active part in governance because the NGOs focus more on financing from outside. That’s why it is important that the NGO sector cooperate with the government so that the country makes progress on the path to the EU.

Victor Juc added that in a state with poor economy and a mass exodus of people, it is hard for the NGO sector to have greater weight, but the people should realize that without participatory democracy, the rule of law will not be built and the capacity of the state powers will be reduced. As a result, the human rights in Moldova will not be respected and there won’t be functional economy. Consequently, good governance implies active cooperation with the NGO sector.

Doctor Habilitate Constantin Solomon said the government is the country’s mirror. That’s why it must establish social peace. The events that will take place in the near future will enable the ruling parties to improve their image before the people.
