The Federal Government will offer the Republic of Moldova assistance in overcoming the consequences of the Russian attack on Ukraine. Parliamentary state secretary to the Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Niels Annen will have discussions with government officials in Chisinau today so as to see how Germany can support the country, IPN reports, quoting a press release of the Embassy of Germany.

Niels Annen said Russia’s aggression violates international law, brings immeasurable suffering not only to Ukraine, but shakes the whole region and jeopardizes European peace order. Germany already took sides with the reformed partners in Eastern Europe. “During almost 30 years, Germany has accompanied the Republic of Moldova as a reliable partner in the development policy, in the process of transforming the market economy, the rule of law and democracy. This partnership is now more important than ever,” stated the German official.

Niels Annen will have meetings with Prime Minister Natalia Gavriliță, Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Spînu, representatives of international organizations and other donors. Niels Annen will collect facts about the management of refugees at a hotspot center on the border with Ukraine and will meet with representatives of the local administration.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine forced almost 1 million people in Ukraine to flee their homes and over 100,000 of these found refuge in Moldova. “The country and the people are making an extraordinary effort. In this crisis situation, we want to offer targeted support, primarily for the hospitable localities, and to contribute to the stabilization of the situation. I will confer on this with partners in Moldova during my visit,” said the official.

Last year alone, the Federal Government offered Moldova €37.5 million in such areas as community development, economic development and professional formation.
