Gheorghe Papuc Wednesday was questioned at the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office in a case in which he is accused of misusing authority in the period when he was Minister of the Interior. After the hearing, Papuc told the press that he is not guilty and will prove his innocence in court, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“When the investigation is over, I will give a news conference and tell everything. Now I will make no statement as I cannot reveal details of the inquiry,” the former minister said.
Asked by the journalists if it is true that the Communists Party used the Ministry of the Interior's motor pool, Gheorghe Papuc said the pool cars have been never used for personal or party interests. “The car was used in acts of charity for children's and old people's homes. We should say thanks to the persons who did those acts,” he said.
According to a communique from the Prosecutor General's Office, Gheorghe Papuc is accused of signing a contract for the lease of nonresidential offices in a building located on Zelinski St in Chisinau and allowed the PCRM's Committee in Botanica to use them. A sum of 502,700 lei was paid from the Ministry of the Interior's budget for the lease of these offices.
The former minister is also accused of giving a car belonging to the Ministry of the Interior to the PCRM for use in December 2005. The car has been used by the PCRM's parliamentary group for four years. The damage caused to the Ministry's budget by such an act was estimated at 326,200 lei.
Gheorghe Papuc is investigated outside prison, but is not allowed to leave the country.
