Government approves Bill on Police Activity
The Ministry of the Interior will only develop and promote state policies on police, without interfering in the police's investigative and other fieldwork activities. This is one of the highlights of the Bill on Police Activity and Police Officer Status, which was approved by the Government at its Thursday's meeting.
Interior Minister Dorin Recean told the Government that the bill aims to depoliticize and demilitarize the police, clearly delimiting all functions. In particular, administrative functions will be assigned to civilians, which is expected to make police activity more efficient and transform the Ministry of the Interior into a public service. “There is also another indirect goal we will achieve with this: bring the police closer to the citizens and improve perception of the police”, stated the Minister.
The bill will also modify the police structurally: there will be the criminal investigation police and the public order police; the central administrative and control unit will be the General Police Inspectorate, which will be chaired by a head appointed by the Government for a term of five years; the Inspectorate will have territorial and specialized subdivisions.
“The Bill provides for the reduction of administrative posts and the increase in the number of executive posts”, said Dorin Recean.
Also on Thursday, the Government approved the Bill on the Carabinieri Service, which will gradually become a service with police functions.
