Government creates National Commission on Language Functioning
The Government on January 11 constituted the National Commission on Language Functioning whose aim will be to remedy the linguistic situation in Moldova, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The commission will play the role of consultative body under the Government and will provide consultancy to private individuals and legal entities on language functioning.
Under the initial plan designed by the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, the commission will have 22 members, but their number may be modified. It will be headed by Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Moldovanu.
Among the commission’s priorities will be to draft new linguistic legislation and to test the elected authorities and public servants on knowledge of Romanian. It is planned to reestablish the Department for Language Functioning that will monitor how the Romanian and the minority languages function in Moldova.
Prime Minister Vlad Filat asked that the commission should include as many representatives as possible, including of the linguistic minorities.
