The Government’s candidate for the position of member of the Superior Council of Prosecutors (SCP) from among civil society representatives, Mihail Sorbala, was named to office. The Cabinet on Wednesday approved his appointment for a six-year term.
Mihail Sorbala in December passed the ethical and financial integrity assessment carried out by the pre-vetting commission, IPN reports.
He has legal studies, is a doctor of law and an associate professor in business, administration and law. In the academic community, he is known as a lecturer and associate professor of the Department of Public Law at the Faculty of Law of the Free International University of Moldova.
The SCP has 10 members. Five members are from among prosecutors, while four members are elected by competition from among civil society, as follows: one by the President of the country, one by the Parliament, one by the Government and one by the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. The chairperson of the Superior Council of Magistracy remains an ex officio member of the SCP.
The Ombudsperson and the Prosecutor General ceased to be ex officio members of the Superior Council of Prosecutors on January 1, 2024, while the Minister of Justice will stop being a member on January 1, 2026.
