Half of drivers pulled over in recent days were speeding

More than 500 drivers, or almost a half of those pulled over in the last several days across the country were found to be over the speed limit, the National Patrol Inspectorate reported.

Other common violations included failure to comply with traffic signage and “fix-it” violations. License plates were removed from 16 cars for unauthorized retrofits and from 2 other cars for tinted windows.

Inspectorate spokesperson Natalia Golovco has told IPN speeding is a leading cause of traffic accidents and drivers are advised to comply with speed limits at all times.

Doing 10-19 km/h over the limit is punishable by a fine from 300 to 600 lei and three penalty points, 20-39 km/h over over the limit by a fine of 600 to 900 lei and four penalty points, and +40 km/h over the limit by a fine of 1,200 to la 1,500 lei and five penalty points. Drivers accumulating 15 points over a period of six months can lose their license in court for a period of six to twelve months.
