Only half of the hospitals in Moldova have refrigerating rooms for keeping bodies. The institutions that do not have an anatomopathological section transport the bodies to the institutions that have this service, the costs being paid on the basis of contract. University lecturer Vladimir Vatamanu, who is a member of the Health Ministry’s morphopathology commission, has told Info-Prim Neo that in Moldova there are 43 district and municipal medical institutions and only 22 of them have refrigerating rooms. The hospitals that do not have such rooms have a special room with air conditioning where the bodies are kept in the warm period of the year. If the person dies at home, the body is taken to the local anatomopathological section. The relatives pay for the hygienic-sanitary processing and keeping of the body. In the case of patients who die in the hospital, the given procedures are performed in the hospital’s anatomopathological section. The transportation of the bodies from the institutions that do not have anatomopathological services is done with special vehicles and is paid by the institution where the patient died. Ruslan Pretula, of the Hospital “Archangel Mikhail”, said that two years ago the hospital bought a refrigerating box with four places. The temperature there is regulated and the doors are blocked. In Moldova there are no producers of refrigerating boxes and they bought such a box from France for 276,000 lei. Rodica Scutelnic, head of the Health Ministry’s Hospital and Emergency Medical Assistance Division, said the Ministry issued an order concerning the improvement of the anatomopathological and cytological services in Moldova, which envisions the provision of the hospitals with anatomic pathology sections, including by cooperating with the local public administration.
