Harsher punishments sought for sex crimes against children
The Moldovan Parliament will consider harsher punishments for those who have sex with minors under 16 years, recruit children for sexual services or force them to attend pornographic acts. A bill to this end that was proposed by the Interior Ministry has been approved by the Parliament's Legal Commission, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Marian Maxian, department head at the Ministry, said that the bill provided punishments that range from a 6,000 fine to up to 5 years' imprisonment for those who use communication means such as the Internet to recruit minors under 16 years.
Forcing children to attend pornographic acts will be punishable by fines of up to 10,000 lei, court-ordered community service hours, or jail time of up to 3 years.
Those involved in child prostitution will be punishable by up to 5 years in prison.
Under the bill, jail time for having sex with minors is increased from up to 5 years to up to 7 years.
However, Raisa Apolschii, member of the Legal Commission, stated that the proposed punishments were two mild and suggested that they should be increased prior to the bill's final reading. The Social Protection Commission, for example, proposed jail time of 7 to 10 years for sex with minors and the Human Rights Commission suggested that pervert acts should be punishable exclusively by incarceration, with no alternatives.
